Downtown Indy's long list of transformative construction projects got even longer Thursday morning.
Why it matters: Officials say the Indiana Fever Sports Performance Center isn't just a facelift for the corner of Delaware and Maryland streets. It's another step towards the city's goal of becoming the epicenter of women's sports.
Driving the news: A groundbreaking ceremony at the former Marion County Jail I site kicked off construction of the $78 million facility.
- Set to open in time for the 2027 WNBA season, the three-story, 108,000-square-foot building will connect to Gainbridge Fieldhouse via skybridge.
Zoom in: Two courts, strength and conditioning equipment, a yoga and Pilates area and a full-service kitchen are some of the amenities included.
- A private outdoor courtyard, mental performance spaces, a hair and nail salon, child care resources and a studio for podcasting or content creation will also be provided.
What they're saying: Fever coach Stephanie White called the facility a game-changer. Not because of the tech or design, but because it sends the message that "our players matter."
- "This is the kind of moment that we dreamed about from day one," she said. "Their health matters. Their families matter. Their futures matter. And we're building a place that supports every part of who they are."
