Fernando's brings Brazilian and Mexican to Mass Ave

Vibe check: The new spot is almost unrecognizable from its earlier days as Roosters and then a short-lived stint as a burger bar.

• It's sleek, modern and moody with what feels like a ton more space.

What to order: Depends on which beach you want to imagine yourself! Fernando's doesn't serve fusion food — they have a menu of both Brazilian and Mexican dishes.

• The El Corazón margarita ($13), with its blend of passion fruit, orange and pomegranate flavors, transported me back to my Cancun resort for a minute, as did the plentiful seafood options on the food menu.
• I ordered the Sinaloa tacos ($23), crispy tortillas topped with shrimp and poblano peppers, but took most of it home because I couldn't stop eating the exceedingly addictive fresh chips and salsa ($7) — not your average Mexican restaurant afterthought here.

• If you're looking to travel farther south, check out traditional Brazilian dishes such as feijoda ($29) — a stew of black beans, pork belly and sausage — or their spin on stroganoff, with chicken and a creamy tomato-based sauce ($24).
