Caitlin Clark took her talents to Netflix's premier talk show couch for a chat with a Hoosier showbiz hall of famer.
Why the matters: The 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year's appearance on "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman" shows fans another side of the rising megastar.
Driving the news: Clark was the guest on the third episode of the fifth season; the show intersperses onstage interview segments with clips of Letterman hanging out with the headliner.
- Clark's episode included a duckpin bowling showdown and a stop at Long's Bakery.
Here's a collection of cool things Clark discussed:
🏆 Her competitive drive is next-level
- Clark said her desire to win is a double-edged sword she's been carrying since childhood.
- "When I'm just playing like a casual card game with my family or my friends, and then like everybody hates me by the end of the night," she said with a laugh. "And I'm like, 'Aw great. I ruined Christmas.'"
🎃 That includes candy collecting
- "When we trick-or-treated in Des Moines growing up, I would be so sweaty under my costume because I was in a dead sprint from house to house. I had to have the most candy," Clark said.
- "Are you still like that?" Letterman asked.
- "Well, I don't trick-or-treat anymore," she responded.
🤬 She doesn't talk trash
- And other WNBA players don't talk it to her, despite what some may think.
- "I swear to you," she said. "Maybe that'll happen next year. The only thing is if somebody says something to me, I probably will go back at you. But I'm not gonna really start it."
- She said if there was any trash talk, it came from WNBA great Diana Taurasi in a back-and-forth Clark described as "all in good fun."
💪 Strength is a big focus
- Clark acknowledged that the WNBA is much more physical than college.
- Her pursuit to bulk up in the offseason has already gone viral.
- "That's probably like the biggest thing I'm working on going into this next season," she said. "Just getting stronger, because the game is so physical."
😎 She wanted to be like her older brother
- When discussing how she taught herself to dribble a basketball as a kid, Clark said it was something that happened because she looked up to her big bro, Blake.
- "I learned to ride my bike at maybe 3 years old without training wheels. Maybe 4 years old. But that was only because my older brother was learning that day and I was like … take mine off right now. I'm learning," she said.
🤮 But not completely like him
- On the topic of getting stronger, Clark spilled about a secret drink she said her brother and other Iowa State football players would drink to put on size.
- "Scrambled eggs, red Gatorade and protein powder into a shake and drink it," she said. "Football players are crazy."
🤗 She's a great hugger
- That's the inside scoop from her former coach at Iowa, Lisa Bluder, who delivered the news to a disappointed Letterman who revealed he never got a hug after two days of hanging out.
- "She gives the best hugs ever," Bluder said. "She goes all in, puts her head on your shoulder."
What's next: Clark's next high-profile TV stop will be an exhibition game this weekend in a stadium where her jersey hangs from the rafters.
- The Fever will take on the Brazilian National Team at the University of Iowa, 4pm Sunday on ESPN.
