Brazilian steakhouse on a budget — just eat the salad bar

• These restaurants are best known for having a variety of meats cooked over an open flame and served tableside.
• They're also generally "all you can eat" and charge a flat rate, which tends to be pretty steep — something that doesn't seem super worth it if you aren't that into meat.

For example: It's $60 for the "full rodizio" dinner at Terra Gaucha.

Yes, but: You can experience the flavor and flair for a fraction of the price by skipping the tableside meat service and eating only at the restaurant's extensive salad bar.

• It's perfect if you're looking for a bargain or, like me, don't eat meat.

How it works: The gourmet salad bar is loaded with charcuterie (so you can still get meat), cheeses, fresh fruits and vegetables, plus a variety of prepared hot and cold side dishes and salads.

• The lobster bisque, polenta fritters and cold shrimp salad were my favorites.
• Plus, the service is still top-notch.

• Pro tip: A pared-down salad bar is available at lunch for $20.
