IND domestic flights cost slightly more than national average

The average cost for a domestic flight out of Indianapolis International Airport exceeds the national average by about the average cost of fast food fries.
By the numbers: Average domestic airfare out of IND was $370 in the third quarter of 2024, per the latest Transportation Department data.
- That's just $4 more than the average for all U.S. airports.
Zoom in: Washington Dulles International ($473), John Wayne Airport in Los Angeles ($428) and San Francisco International ($425) are the most expensive U.S. airports for domestic travel.
- Fort Lauderdale is the cheapest, with average airfare of only $252.
Caveat: This is a snapshot in time, and airfare for some destinations can rise and fall over the year. Plus, lots of factors affect airports' average fares.
- If an airport has more work travelers buying business- or first-class tickets, for example, that could drive up the average fare.
- Conversely, a heavy presence of budget airlines could reduce the average fare.
