While the end of the year is synonymous with Thanksgiving turkeys and Christmas hams, buffalo wings become the main meat on everyone's mind once a new year arrives.
The big picture: That's when Indy sports fans will gather in bars and living rooms to take in must-see events like the college football national championship on Jan. 8, and the Super Bowl on Feb. 9.
Fun fact: According to the National Chicken Council's 2024 Wing Report, Americans ate 1.45 billion wings last Super Bowl.
Zoom in: With that in mind, I'm putting Indy area wing spots to the test this holiday season, starting with a beloved IU icon that is finally spreading its buffalo wings.
Driving the news: BuffaLouie's opened the doors to its Carmel location this fall.
What I ordered: Classic bone-in buffalo wings, hot with a side of ranch and blue cheese. That's what I'll be ordering from every eatery I visit to keep the playing field as even as possible.
My take: Four out of five flats (flats > drums, don't @ me) on my personal scale.
- The wings were crispy, tender and coated with plenty of sauce. BuffaLouie's also scored big bonus points for their tater tots which were golden fried to perfection.
- But the "hot" sauce wasn't really that hot, and the curly fries fell flat where the tots soared.
Real cost per wing: You get an order of 10 for $16.99. So after tax and tip, you're paying more than $20 — or $2 per wing — for a 10 piece.
If you go: 43 W. Main Street in Carmel.
- Open 11am-9pm daily.
Your turn: Who do you think makes the best buffalo wings around Indy, and where should I go to chow down next? Send me your recommendations!
