Hoosiers ranked above Notre Dame in first College Football Playoff poll

The Indiana Hoosiers ranked No. 8 in the first College Football Playoff poll released Tuesday night, two spots ahead of No. 10 Notre Dame.

Why it matters: The CFP is entering a new era as this season will be a 12-team format for the first time since the CFP was introduced in 2014.

More teams will have a shot at competing for a national championship as the field is expanded beyond the traditional four-team setup.

State of play: Indiana, mostly known as a basketball school, is on a historical run as they've started the season 9-0.

Yes, but: Their toughest test is ahead of them as they still have to travel to Columbus to face Ohio State on Nov. 23.

Meanwhile, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have amassed a 7-1 record, winning six straight after a shocking home loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2.

What's next: Indiana will host the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, with a 3:30pm kickoff on CBS.

Notre Dame will take on the Florida State Seminoles at 7:30pm on NBC.
