Indianapolis is just two days away from trick-or-treaters hitting the streets for another night of fun and fright in the Circle City.
Why it matters: Those staying home and handing out fun-sized Snickers play a major role in helping young Hoosiers have a positive trick-or-treating experience.
Driving the news: With that in mind, we asked Axios Indianapolis readers for their thoughts on how to make the big night one to remember, and not one to forget.
Here's what you had to say about Halloween night during our 2024 Axios Indy Survey!
🌚 Don't stay out too late on a school night.
- 58% of survey respondents agreed that 9pm was too late to knock on doors on a school night, which coincides with trick-or-treat hours in Indy being from 6-8pm.
- 27% said 8pm was too late, and 14% said 10pm.
- No one selected 7pm as an option.
🚫 Once you're old enough to drive, you might be too old for trick-or-treating.
- 19% of readers said 16 was too old to trick-or-treat, followed by 14 (14%) and 15 (12%).
- However, 19% of respondents also opted to write-in and say that no one is too old as long as they're willing to dress up.
👶 Trick-or-treating with a baby? Whatever, just take the candy.
- When asked if parents should trick-or-treat for candy with a baby who can't eat it yet, 46.5% selected "Who cares!"
- 30% said no, and 23% said to go for it.
What they're saying: A number of readers also took advantage of some space at the bottom of the survey to share other opinions they had on Halloween. Here are a few highlights.
⏱️ "Two hours is not enough time! These poor children don't get to enjoy Halloween like we used to in the '80s and '90s. Also, trunk-or-treat creeps me out. As a child, I was taught to avoid strangers trying to give me candy out of their car."
😁 "It's not my favorite holiday, but I love welcoming the little ones. They sure need our smiles and encouragement these days!"
🫶 "I'm never going to turn away a trick-or-treater because of age. You never know someone's disabilities, and who cares if a teen is trick-or-treating. It's a safe activity and you should be a kid as long as you can!"
🆓 "It's free candy day. I don't care if someone isn't wearing a costume or can't say trick-or-treat. Everyone gets candy at my door, parents included. Obnoxious children get Mountain Dew."
🥃 "We provide hot bourbon and cider for adults out with their kids."
🚗 "The people who drive kids who can walk, door-to-door, in regular neighborhoods where the houses are close together bug me. Kids don't need more candy than they can get on foot, and they could use the exercise if they're eating 10 pounds of candy."
🗳️ "Forget the terrifying election and have some good fun."
The bottom line: The Axios Indy team is wishing you all a safe and happy Halloween night!
