Indy's airport is still one of the best.
Why it matters: The Indianapolis International Airport maintained its top tier status in J.D. Power's annual survey, despite a record-breaking number of passengers passing through the airport during the last year.
Driving the news: The survey, released last week, ranked IND as the best airport serving fewer than 10 million passengers for the third consecutive year.
By the numbers: More than 26,000 people who passed through an airport within 30 days from August 2023 through July 2024 were surveyed.
- Respondents rated their arrival and departure experiences across seven key areas, including: ease of travel, terminal facilities, staff and availability of food and retail.
- The Indy airport was recognized as No. 1 in food, beverage and retail and in terminal facilities.
The intrigue: The Axios Indianapolis team recently passed through Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, the top mega airport — defined as those with 33 million or more passengers per year.
💠Our thought bubble: Despite being (obviously) larger and busier, MSP is a very nice experience.
- If Indy is looking to upgrade the bathrooms (which we'd argue it could stand to do), MSP would be a great model. Just sayin'.
- Plus: MSP has a train that travels between the airport and Mall of America. Harder to replicate, but heckin' cool.
👀 What we're watching: Indy is on the cusp of moving into the large airport category, which is based on the number of annual passengers, and could bring new competition for the top spot.
