Welcome to Meet the Maker, a series dedicated to shining a spotlight on local creators of all kinds.
Meet Jennifer Meeker, an Indianapolis-based ceramic artist and photographer who is a featured artist for the 57th annual Penrod Arts Fair.
The inspo: Meeker told Axios her work focuses on incorporating the interesting things she finds in nature into her creations.
- A self-described "tree hugging, forest frolicking, mushroom foraging ceramic artist," Meeker said a small town upbringing that included lots of time playing outdoors is what began her artistic journey.
- "Observing the changing of the seasons through different colors and textures in nature and man-made obstacles that would interact with trees is what I believed sparked my creativity," she said.
Zoom in: Meeker said she focuses on ceramics and photography because the two mediums are very different and provide her a lot of creative variety.
- Her father was a freelance photographer and gave Meeker her first camera around the age of 8.
- "I discovered ceramics, in particular the potter's wheel, in college," said the Herron School of Art grad. "I fell in love with the way the clay felt between my fingers in the potter's wheel."
What she's making now: A trip to the Newfields gardens to celebrate "Indiana's Nicest Day."
- This year's Penrod Arts Fair runs from 9am-5pm Saturday.
- Tickets are $20.
