Sunday marked the 20th anniversary of Indianapolis Police Department Officer Timothy "Jake" Laird being killed in the line of duty.

Why it matters: His death at the hands of a man firing a rifle in the street on the morning of Aug. 18, 2004, would go on to provide the inspiration for Indiana's "red flag" gun laws.

• IMPD held a memorial roll call on Friday in honor of Laird and everyone else impacted by the shooting.
• Laird's parents were recognized for generating more than $1.3 million for Indiana police and fire departments through the Jake Laird Memorial Fund.
