The Indianapolis Colts started their 2024 season with a losing effort in Lucas Oil Stadium.
Why it matters: Despite the L, the team's preseason debut gave fans a look at a healthier starting lineup than they've had in the past, and a crew of exciting rookies who might be the future.
Driving the news: The Colts lost to the Denver Broncos Sunday, 30-34.
- The game also marked the return of starting quarterback Anthony Richardson.
- The No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft hasn't taken a snap since Oct. 8, 2023, when he suffered a shoulder injury.
Zoom in: Richardson made it through Sunday's game unscathed, and with very little to go as far as how he may perform in 2024.
- The Colts' starters only spent two drives on the field before taking it easy the rest of the afternoon.
- Richardson went 2-4 for 25 yards. He also rushed for 1 yard.
- His longest completion was a 19-yard pass to tight end Mo Alie-Cox.
What they're saying: "I thought it was good," head coach Shane Steichen said of Richardson's performance. "First time in over 300 days getting out there and playing with his guys … it was good just to get those guys out in a game-like situation."
Between the lines: While the starters had limited time to shine, the Colts' next generation did their best to make an impact.
- Former UCLA defensive end Laiatu Latu only recorded a single tackle, but the rookie first-round draft pick demanded attention — and at times double coverage — to be kept in check.
- Sixth-round pick Micah Abraham made a play that caught Richardson's eye when he forced a fumble, picked it up and took it 45 yards into the end zone.
What's next: The Colts' next preseason game is next Sunday at 7pm against the Arizona Cardinals at home.
If you go: Tickets start at $6.
