Downtown Indy sculpture earns international praise

• The awards are an international competition highlighting design projects that integrate commissioned art into interior, architectural or public spaces.

Flashback: "Monument" was installed on Monument Circle between August 2015 and September 2019.

• It was refreshed and moved to its permanent home at the Indianapolis Public Library's Central Library last October.
• The books in "Monument" are supplied by the library and can be borrowed without a library card.

The inspo: "Monument" was developed for The Public Collection, a public art and literacy project developed by Rachel M. Simon.

• A Mark Twain quote runs across the top reading: "A public library is the most enduring of memorials, the trustiest monument for the preservation of an event or a name or an affection; for it, and it only, is respected by wars and revolutions, and survives them."

What's next: Two of the top 100 honorees will be crowned People's Choice winners at the end of August. Public voting ended July 2.
