Indianapolis nonprofit 91 Place awarded $100K grant

• Despite U.S. homelessness hitting a record high in 2023, the number of homeless individuals dropped 8% year over year in Indianapolis.

Zoom in: The grant will allow 91 Place, which provides transitional housing, workforce development and mental health support to people between the ages of 18-and 24, to purchase one of the three homes it operates.

• The homes, all rental properties, give youth a place to live for up to two years.

Karynn Adamowicz, chief advancement officer at 91 Place, said being able to purchase one of these homes reduces the nonprofit's dependence on rentals and allocates resources directly to their programs and services.

• "One of my favorite things about 91 Places is that after they leave the house, that's not the end … they stay connected to us, whether that's stopping by the house for dinner or stopping by for something else," Adamowicz said. "So it will continue to be their home for forever now."

How it works: Impact 100 is a charitable women's giving circle that awards high-impact grants with a focus on funding critical needs, new ventures and innovative ways to solve social problems.

• Members donate $1,000 to join. Shared memberships, in which two to four women pool their money to share one vote, are also available.
• Impact 100 has granted over $3 million to more than 70 organizations.

What they're saying: "It's not uncommon for our finalists to get on the radars of huge nonprofits, so that's part of our goal … to be an impact that helps them transform into something that can take them to that next level," Impact 100 Greater Indianapolis president Freedom Smith told Axios.
