After three years of battling rezoning issues and a reputation for rowdiness, The Greatest of All Taverns has reopened its doors in Midtown Carmel.

Why it matters: Better known as The GOAT, the bar voluntarily closed in April 2021 after restrictions related to operating in a residential zone were too much to overcome.

State of play: JP Rickerson, general manager for The GOAT, told Axios that the bar still operates under a special set of rules related to its zoning.

  • That includes ending outdoor food service at 7pm, clearing the patio by 8pm and ending alcohol sales a half hour before closing.

Yes, but: Rickerson said despite the strict rules, the support from the community has been overwhelming since The GOAT's soft reopen in late March, adding that patrons who want to see the restrictions lifted should notify city leaders.

  • "But be nice about it. Because the majority of people are on our side, and the people who are currently making decisions are not the same people that shut us down," Rickerson said.

If you go: The GOAT is having a grand reopening on May 4.

  • The bar is open 3pm to midnight Monday and Tuesday, 11am to midnight Wednesday and Thursday, 11am to 1am Friday and Saturday and 11am to midnight Sunday.

What we're watching: Rickerson said they will debut an elevated menu and drink list this summer.
