Meet the Maker: The NAATC

• The NAATC is also wrapping up the final weekend of their spring showcase, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," at the Phoenix Theater.

The inspo: Latrice Young, the NAATC's director of community engagement strategy, told Axios the original inspiration was to create a permanent physical space for local Black and brown theater organizations to call their own.

• She said that the need goes beyond what theatergoers see on stage, creating opportunities for professionals like stage managers, set builders, and costume designers.
• "There are actors who are on stage who have been acting forever … and then we have people where this is their very first production," Lorene said. "We're not just about giving the chance to the people who are super experienced, but we want to make sure we're honoring those people as well."

What they're making now: One final weekend of memories at The Phoenix. Sunday's production of August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" wraps a 12-show run that began March 8.

If you go: Performances take place Thursday night, Friday and Saturday at 8pm. The final show is at 2:30pm Sunday.
