Houston has been getting a global spotlight during the World Cup, and one thing has stood out to fans: its stadium. 

Why it matters: Sometimes it takes an outsider's perspective to appreciate what we have. 

Known as NRG Stadium before the World Cup and as Houston Stadium during it, it'll be officially called Reliant Stadium once the tournament ends. Name notwithstanding, the stadium has been at the center of recent debates over its future, but many World Cup visitors have come away impressed.

Context: The stadium, which opened in 2002, received several upgrades ahead of the tournament, including new video boards, an upgraded sound system and improved sports lighting.

State of play: Online, people have been handing out praise — from the atmosphere in person to how it looks on TV, with some saying it's the most beautiful stadium. 

The Athletic ranked the stadium fifth among World Cup venues for match day experience, giving it high marks for its atmosphere, transportation, aesthetics and suitability for soccer.

The stadium is one of three World Cup stadiums to have a retractable roof and air conditioning, and it's one of the few within the host city limits. 

What they're saying: Fans have been raving to Axios about the air conditioning, location and even the TVs.

Diego Tameirao from Boston, who has been following Brazil, said Houston's stadium is by far the best. "I like the location, the chemistry. I like the atmosphere."

"Technology-wise, the screens are really big and good, speakers are really nice," says Hector Garcia of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. His friend Alan Jurado of El Paso, chimed in, saying, "You definitely feel the difference as soon as you open the door, the AC hits you."  

Yuda Matsumura of Tokyo said the stadium was "very nice," even a "bit too cold."

Between the lines: Reliant Stadium has become the center of negotiations over the Texans' next lease. While the team is prioritizing renovations, saying maintenance is needed, it hasn't ruled out building a stadium. 

The stadium everyone suddenly loves

We're one of three stadiums in the World Cup that have a retractable roof and are blasting AC.

A lot of soccer history — and plenty of beautiful moments — were made in Houston as the city hosted seven FIFA World Cup matches.

Why it matters: Houston was the stage for smiles, cheers and milestones that fans and teams will forever associate with the city.

Houston is done hosting matches, but it remains a host city through the end of the tournament, with watch parties, the fan festival and other events still bringing fans together.

What they're saying: "Everything's gone beautifully so far. We couldn't have asked for anything better. It's really been spectacular on all angles, from an operational perspective, but also just from an experience perspective for everybody," Chris Canetti, president of the FIFA World Cup Houston host committee, tells Axios.

"I wish it would never end. It's been just the experience of a lifetime for so many different people; it's been so fun, and it's been such a magical moment for our city."

Here is some of the history that happened in Houston:

🇨🇻 Cape Verde became the tournament's Cinderella story, and Houston was the city that witnessed the island nation advance to the knockout stage. Jubilee and joy radiated through the stadium.

🇨🇼 Curaçao scored its first-ever World Cup goal, as it was the island's first World Cup. The smallest country to ever qualify for the World Cup did so against four-time World Cup champion Germany, and its supporters celebrated every moment.

🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal became the first player to score a goal in six World Cups.

🇨🇩 Congo also scored its first World Cup goal, as the country returned to the tournament after more than 50 years.

🇺🇿 Uzbekistan made its tournament debut. Houston hosted the country's second World Cup match and helped start a new fan march tradition.  

🇨🇦 Canada reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. Its run came to an end Saturday in Houston against Morocco.

Plus, Houston saw some impeccable and close matches — including Brazil vs. Japan and Portugal vs. Congo.

The big picture: The World Cup isn't just about history-making moments on the pitch. For Houston, it also meant becoming even more of a global gathering place.

The tournament delivered emotional goodbyes as Saudi Arabia, Japan and Canada exited. But through the devastating losses came sportsmanship on the field and camaraderie between the fans. 

Fans packed the streets and bars, marching before matches and celebrating while sharing their cultures and traditions, including when the Netherlands supporters' march drew more than 25,000 people, according to the host committee.

By the numbers: 27 goals were scored in Houston Stadium. 

There were five sold-out matches, drawing about 480,000 fans in total. 

The bottom line: The matches are over, but the memories — and the history made in Houston — will last forever.

What's next: Houston is listed as a possible host city in a joint bid to host the 2031 Women's World Cup.

Houston's World Cup group stage matches ended with a memorable underdog story: Cape Verde advanced to the knockout rounds after a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia Friday night.

Why it matters: The tiny island nation off Africa's west coast became the smallest country ever to reach the World Cup knockout rounds — and Houston got to be the stage for that history. 

The vibe: Cape Verde needed everything to fall into place, including Spain beating Uruguay in a simultaneous match. After the final whistle, players huddled around a phone to check the Spain-Uruguay result before erupting in jubilation as they clinched a top-two finish in their group stage. 

Fans — some newly converted Cape Verde supporters during the tournament, they tell Axios — cheered, celebrating the team's historic breakthrough.

The intrigue: For weeks before the World Cup, Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia was one of the tournament's cheapest tickets.

By matchday, demand had surged after Cape Verde's goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, went viral for his standout performance against Spain. 

What they're saying: "We represent our island, but we ​also represent Africa," the team's coach Bubista said at a press conference. "This shows that even the ​smallest countries can prove that nothing is impossible." 

The coach added that they are proud to play Argentina next. 

What's next: The city now turns to hosting knockout rounds, beginning Monday with Brazil vs. Japan.

Cape Verde makes World Cup history in Houston

The island nation became the smallest country ever to reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stage.

Houston Stadium's final World Cup match delivered late drama, with Morocco knocking out co-host Canada 3-0 on Saturday.

State of play: The stadium was awash in red as Morocco and Canada supporters filled the stands in their teams' colors for the Round of 16 match. 

The game was scoreless at halftime before Azzedine Ounahi scored twice. A late goal sealed Morocco's victory and sent the Atlas Lions to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive World Cup. Morocco will face France on Thursday in Boston.

What they're saying: Fans came from Canada, Morocco, Dubai and across the U.S. — Morocco's national airline even added a dozen speciality flights to Houston. But for many local Moroccan fans, it was their first opportunity to cheer on their favorite team at a World Cup without leaving home.

"It's amazing. It's a dream come true for me. I've never watched the World Cup live before — never had the opportunity," Adam Salah, from Houston, tells Axios.

Yassine Keetani, a Houstonian from Morocco, says, "It's kind of crazy" to see his team in Houston. "It was so much fun — the atmosphere, all of it."

"Being able to just watch them win, close to home and enjoy the experience with fellow fans, it's great," says Tony Hall, who says his family is from Morocco. 

The bottom line: It was a fun run as Houston Stadium transformed into a memorable stage for World Cup matches. 

Morocco advances in Houston's final World Cup match

Houston Stadium closed out its World Cup run with one final memorable match.

In perhaps the most riveting match Houston has seen this World Cup, Brazil edged out Japan 2-1 minutes before the final whistle on Monday.

Why it matters: As the World Cup enters the knockout rounds with raised stakes, Houston is getting a taste of tighter matches, louder crowds and passionate fans spending even more to follow their teams.

The vibe: The tension was palpable. Japan led 1-0 at halftime before Brazil equalized, and the score remained deadlocked for much of the second half until Brazil scored the second goal.

And even after Japan lost, fans stayed behind to pick up trash in their signature blue bags, per their tradition.

What they're saying: "I was anxious," said Diego Tameirao, a Brazil fan from Boston who's been following the team. But he said he felt relieved and happy in the end.

Tameirao paid $3,000 for a ticket, plus $1,300 more for airfare and hotel. He tells Axios he's budgeting $50,000 this summer and following the team to New Jersey for the next round.

Lifelong Brazil fan Victor Peña of Houston says "it's a dream" to see his team play in his hometown.

What's next: Houston's last World Cup match is July 4, with Canada facing either the Netherlands or Morocco in the round of 16.

The tension was palpable when Brazil equalized and the game was tied going into stoppage time.
