James Turrell's Rice Skyspace reopens

Driving the news: The Skyspace's daily sunrise and sunset light shows return with a renovated LED lighting system installed under the supervision of Turrell's studio.

• The artwork temporarily closed during construction of Rice's nearby Virani Hall, giving the Moody Center for the Arts, which oversees the Skyspace, a chance to replace its original lighting fixtures and controls.

Flashback: The pyramid structure opened in 2012 and seats 120 people across two levels. It's the only two-story Skyspace among the more than 100 Turrell has created worldwide.

• Before its closure, it drew an estimated 20,000 visitors a year.

What they're saying: "For students, it is an integral part of campus life. For Houstonians, it's a part of the city's identity, and for art enthusiasts around the world, it's a beacon that brings them to Rice University for a singular experience," Joel Thompson, deputy director of the Moody, said in a statement.

The intrigue: "Twilight Epiphany" isn't Houston's only Turrell work. The light artist also has installations at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Live Oak Friends Meeting House.

If you go: The roughly 40-minute free light sequences run daily at sunrise and sunset.

• For sunrise, arrive about an hour early. For sunset, arrive 10-15 minutes early to snag a seat.
