Zoom in: Houston Methodist also earned a spot on the Honor Roll, which recognizes 20 hospitals nationwide for exceptional performance across multiple specialties.

• The hospital ranked nationally in 10 adult specialties, including No. 5 for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery and No. 7 for obstetrics and gynecology.

Meanwhile, MD Anderson ranked No. 1 in the nation for cancer care for the 12th consecutive year.

The Houston area claimed seven of the state's top 10 hospitals:

• No. 1: Houston Methodist Hospital
• No. 3 (tied with a Dallas hospital): Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital
• No. 5: Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center
• No. 6: Memorial Hermann Hospital
• No. 7: Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital
• No. 9: Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital
• No. 10 (tied with an Austin hospital): Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital

How they did it: U.S. News analyzed more than 800 million patient records, weighing factors including risk-adjusted mortality, preventable complications and patient experience.
