"A Nice Indian Boy," a play-turned-movie, is back where it started — on the stage.
The big picture: This romantic comedy is a funny, heartwarming story that's as much about family as it is romance.
The story follows an Indian man who falls for a man with a deep appreciation for Indian culture who also happens to be white — then brings him home to meet his family.
Shafaq's experience: I burst into laughter within the first minute.
The Aerial Roots Theatre Company production is filled with Bollywood references and songs, while Hindi phrases are woven naturally into the dialogue. It feels genuine for South Asian audiences while remaining welcoming to everyone else, and it easily captured quintessential family dynamics.
Seeing the story in its original stage format with a local cast — after the film adaptation in 2024 — was a treat.
💭 My thought bubble: The set design was beautiful, but I couldn't stop thinking about the mom's saris, thinking I want to buy them for my mom.
