Houston Restaurant Weeks kicked off this weekend, providing meal deals and an opportunity to give back amidst the city's growing food insecurity.
Why it matters: It's the largest fundraiser for the Houston Food Bank.
- "It absolutely supports and is critical to us being able to continue to meet the needs of households," Melanie McGuire, Houston Food Bank's senior director of programs, tells Axios. She said it helps provide 4.9 million meals to families.
How it works: The event runs through Sept. 7. The hundreds of participating restaurants will have fixed menu prices: $25 for a two-course brunch or lunch and $39 or $55 for a three-course dinner.
- Restaurants will donate $1 for lunch/brunch and $3 or $5 for dinner, depending on which meal you choose. Every $1 equals three meals generated by the Houston Food Bank.
By the numbers: Since Houston Restaurant Weeks started in 2003, the event has raised more than $22 million for the Houston Food Bank and has provided more than 65 million meals for Houstonians.
The intrigue: Some restaurants — including Pappas Restaurants, Mimo and La Mex — are forgoing the official event and donating proceeds to local charities (food banks, LGBTQ+ youth organizations, etc.) through their own promotions, citing the new $1,000 upfront participation fee for Houston Restaurant Weeks.
