Twenty-one of the world's biggest companies by revenue call Texas home — including nine in the Houston area — according to the 2026 Fortune Global 500 list released yesterday.
Why it matters: Texas continues to cement itself as a corporate powerhouse, and the number could keep growing as more companies relocate or establish headquarters in the state.
Zoom in: The top Houston global companies are Chevron (ranked No. 36), Phillip 66 (No. 61), Sysco (No. 159), ConocoPhillips (No. 243), Enterprise Products Partners (No. 292), Plains GP Holdings (No. 343), SLB (No. 460).
Spring is home to two more: ExxonMobil (No. 15) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (No. 481).
Unsurprisingly, most of the Houston-area companies on the list are in the energy business.
The intrigue: Hewlett Packard Enterprise is new to the Global 500 this year. Among the other Houston-area companies, only ConocoPhillips climbed in the rankings, rising two spots from last year.
Zoom out: The U.S. has 141 companies on the Global 500, its highest total since 2008. China ranks second with 122 companies.
Amazon overtook Walmart for the No. 1 spot after Walmart held the top ranking for 12 consecutive years.
