Driving the news: Mississippi egg producer Cal-Maine Foods made the donation last month, equalling about 8,100 dozen eggs.
They'll be distributed to the Houston Food Bank's partner organizations throughout the region through Easter and Passover, food bank president and CEO Brian Greene said in a statement.
The intrigue: Eggs are one of the most-requested items at food banks because of their nutrient-rich versatility, Greene said.
Yes, but: "They are also among the most difficult to provide because of limited supply and their perishability but are difficult to procure because of limited supply perishability," Greene said.
Zoom out: The donation was through the American Egg Board's Great American Egg Drive, which saw nearly 5 million eggs donated to food pantries nationwide.
The board recently partnered with nonprofit HATCH to help increase egg distribution year round.
