Jigsaw puzzling isn't just a solitary bad-weather activity anymore — it's snapping into place as a social sport in cities across the U.S., including Houston.
Why it matters: Puzzling's shift from solo to social mirrors a bigger trend: People are turning analog or "grandma" hobbies into in-person communities.
- There were 151% more puzzle competitions from August 2024 to July 2025, compared to the year prior, according to a report from live event marketplace Eventbrite.
How it works: Typically, teams of two or four gather around tables, each with the same mystery puzzle sealed in a bag. After a countdown, they open it — sometimes groaning at the image — and race to finish.
- First ones to finish shout "Done!" and collect prizes.
Zoom in: The Texas Jigsaw Puzzle Association is hosting the Puzzle Rodeo on March 21 in Pearland, including five speed puzzle competitions with varying time limits and parameters.
- Benny Thunders in the Heights hosts monthly speed puzzle play every first Saturday of the month (the next is April 4).
- Competitors will square off Wednesday at the Harris County Public Library's Puzzle and Pizza Party in South Houston.
Flashback: Last month's Texas Speed Puzzling Championship events held in Houston and Dallas drew competitors from across the state.
💠Jay's thought bubble: My sister competes in puzzle competitions and has quite the knack for it.
- She got first place at her first pairs competition at the Montgomery County Public Library in 2023 and second place in two following competitions. Who knew!
The Bottom line: Speed puzzle contests may be the missing piece for people looking for low-pressure conversation and competition.
