The viral hockey romance show that aired a couple of months ago still has fans swooning.
Why it matters: "Heated Rivalry," the book series turned TV hit on HBO, has sparked real-life connections — and Houstonians are showing up for it.
Stunning stat: The six-episode first season of "Heated Rivalry" has reached 10.6 million viewers in the U.S., with its audience more than doubling since the finale — a sign of the show's expanding reach.
Between the lines: Yes, the show includes gay sex scenes. But fans and creators say it's the tenderness — and a version of masculinity and deep love rarely shown on-screen — that resonates most.
Driving the news: Houston businesses are planning watch parties and themed dance raves, especially this Valentine's Day weekend, for viewers craving an emotional romance fix.
State of play: Watch parties at the bar Angel Share were such a hit in January that owner and fan Mary Ellen Angel launched "re-rewatch" events this month. Angel even added two more TV screens to accommodate growing crowds.
- The first two episodes, which are more sexually explicit, drew strong crowds. But as the storyline deepened, so did turnout.
- For Episodes 5 and 6, Angel had to turn away about 300 people who lined the block after the bar hit its 150-person capacity.
The vibe: Wholesome and respectful. Fans made and traded bracelets. Some brought artwork. People cheered at key moments, knowing the lines.
What they're saying: "Everybody there is there with kindness and wanting connection, and to feel safe and celebrate love," Angel tells Axios. "It's just a very kind group of people. Everybody that is there, they're in love."
Zoom in: Club 90 is touring "Heated Rivalry" fan nights across the country featuring songs from the show and fan edits. Three Houston dates — Feb. 13 and 14 and March 12 — are sold out.
