Houston Audubon has closed out its "Save Bolivar" campaign, securing the final piece needed to fully protect the Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary.
Why it matters: Bolivar Flats serves as a major lifeline for hundreds of thousands of shorebirds each year, offering space to nest, winter and refuel during long migratory journeys.
State of play: The nonprofit finalized the purchase of a nearly 53-acre parcel on Jan. 15 for $3 million, completing a years-long effort to safeguard the Flats — a 1,301-acre site — from planned development.
- The acquisition locks in permanent protection for one of the upper Texas coast's most critical bird habitats.
What they're saying: "Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary is an incredibly special place for birds along the Upper Texas Coast, and the response to protect it was overwhelming," Jed Aplaca, president and CEO of Houston Audubon, said in an announcement.
- "The passion and generosity of people who care about birds, nature, and the environment made it possible to permanently safeguard this habitat."
Flashback: Houston Audubon has worked since the 1980s to preserve the sanctuary. Most of the surrounding land was already protected, including an adjacent $3 million purchase finalized in July with support from local foundations.
The big picture: With the final parcel in hand, Houston Audubon now controls the sanctuary's full footprint, creating a continuous protected landscape for wildlife.
What's next: The Bolivar Peninsula Nature Trail, which will include the sanctuary, is expected to be completed in 2027 and will connect 12 sites across forested, wetland, beach and bayside areas in Galveston County.
