Houston has several ways to give and receive help as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits dry up and the government shutdown carries on.
The big picture: The shutdown left 830,000 Greater Houston residents — more than half of whom are children — without funds for food starting Nov. 1.
State of play: The Texas agency that administers SNAP benefits appears unsure of what benefits Texans can expect this month.
- When asked where things stand for Texans relying on SNAP, Texas Health and Human Services spokesperson James Rivera told Axios the agency "continues to monitor how the federal government shutdown may impact benefits," but he offered no specifics.
Context: After two federal courts forced its hand, the White House now says it will pay partial SNAP payments for the 42 million Americans who rely on the food program.
- It's not yet clear when those payments are going out.
Zoom out: Without SNAP benefits, food insecurity is becoming an even-bigger problem for Houston-area families.
How you can help: Several nonprofits and religious organizations across Houston are working to fill the gaps.
- The Houston Food Bank is seeking donations of food, time and money as they host twice-weekly food drives for SNAP recipients and federal workers without pay.
- Houston's Meals on Wheels program is accepting monetary donations, as is the statewide initiative.
- GiveDirectly is accepting donations to give one-time $50 payments to SNAP recipients with children nationwide.
- Companies have announced corporate donations.
If you need help: Houston's Catholic Charities has expanded food pantry hours at its three locations. Registration and an ID is required.
- Houston ISD expanded its breakfast service and after-school supper programs. The district also offers food and other essentials for students and their families at its Sunrise Centers.
- The YMCA of Greater Houston also hosts weekly food distribution events at sites throughout Harris County.
