The Houston Public Library system has added four more Family Place areas to its network.
Why it matters: The spaces offer free, nurturing environments and educational programs where families with young children up to age 5 can learn, play and grow together.
The librarians receive additional training to lead the activities.
Driving the news: The Carnegie Library became the latest branch to open a Family Place room last weekend, bringing the total to 14 across the city.
This follows September openings at Scenic Woods Regional Library, McCrane-Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Library and Kendall Neighborhood Library.
Each Family Place features play sessions led by early childhood specialists, storytimes and sensory activities and resources on parenting and child development.
What they're saying: "We're creating a circle of care during the most critical years of a child's development because no one should have to do this alone," Sandy Gaw, library director, said in a statement.
