FIFA seeks Houston volunteers for World Cup

• Volunteers will get to soak up the buzz, help keep things moving and be part of the chaos and fun.

State of play: FIFA expects to have about 5,200 volunteers in Houston.

Perks: Volunteers will get a World Cup uniform, a certificate and food and refreshments during shifts.

How it works: Applications are open for people over 18. English fluency is required.

• Volunteers must be able to commit to eight shifts and be available during the full tournament.
• Tryouts for volunteers are planned later this year, and volunteer roles will be offered early next year.
• Volunteers will work at the media center, fan festivals and transportation centers. Training sessions are scheduled in the spring.

What's next: Match tickets go on sale in phases starting Sept. 10 for Visa cardholders.
