Happy Father's Day weekend to all the dads and parental figures, including this papa pachyderm at the Houston Zoo.
Why it matters: The Asian elephant, Thailand, affectionately known as Thai, is turning the big 6-0 on Monday.
He's the oldest breeding male elephant in North America and the second-oldest male in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums population. He's been a fixture in the city for 45 years — and he's still blowing raspberries to get what he wants.
Stunning facts: Thai is the father of six members of the zoo's herd (Tupelo, Joy, Tilly, Nelson, Teddy and Kirby) and grandfather to one (Winnie).
The elephant-sized picture: Thai has defied the odds for male elephants, who typically don't live as long as females.
Known for his laidback yet demanding spirit, he's an unusually social bull who shares space with calves, elderly females and younger males — a rarity in the elephant world.
What they're saying: "Every day with Thai is a gift," says Kristin Windle, one of his longtime keepers.
"He's taught us so much about the needs and behavior of aging male elephants, and we tailor every aspect of his care to ensure he's thriving at every stage of life."
Thai's milestone birthday falls just after Father's Day this year, but the Zoo is celebrating early. Stop by the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat to wish Thai a happy birthday — and bring your own dad along for the visit.
