Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the former longtime archbishop of Galveston-Houston, is part of a highly secretive conclave that will meet starting today to pick a new pope.
The big picture: Pope Francis' death put into motion a meticulous process that brings cardinals from across the globe to the Vatican for a historic vote on who will lead the Roman Catholic Church.
The conclave typically draws the attention of those in and out of the faith community and marks a new era of leadership for the church.
Zoom in: DiNardo is one of 10 U.S. cardinals among the 135 electors who will vote on the new leader of the church.
He became archbishop of Galveston-Houston upon Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza's retirement in 2006 and became a cardinal in 2007, the first from the Southern United States.
