Scoops keep the sweat away? Is that a new saying now? Photo: Shafaq Patel/Axios
👋 Shafaq here! I'm gearing up for face-melting weather, which means it's ice cream season. So I recently tried some delicious stretchy ice cream.
Dig in: Booza serves Middle Eastern-style stretchy ice cream, letting you play with your food while enjoying fun, deep flavors.
The shop is run by the Rukab family, whose recipe dates back to the 1930s, when the owner's great-grandmother picked it up during the final days of the Ottoman Empire. They began selling it in a shop in Ramallah, a Palestinian city in the West Bank, in 1941.
Fun fact: Resin from a Mastic tree gives the ice cream its pull-y property.
My experience: It was hard to choose from all the tempting flavors, but I landed on rosewater, roasted pistachio and Turkish coffee (three scoops in a waffle cone for $8 — a steal in Houston). Next time, I'm going for ashta (a Middle Eastern clotted cream) and orange blossom.
The flavors were spot-on, and the consistency was creamy and perfect. I loved the stretch with each spoonful.
