Texas has more registered vehicles than licensed drivers.
Why it matters: Texas' size and scattered public transportation systems make it difficult to get anywhere without a car.
By the numbers: The state had almost 26 million registered vehicles in 2024. The latest figures from 2022 show the state has over 18.7 million licensed drivers.
Zoom in: More than 5.5 million cars were registered last year in the Texas Department of Transportation's Houston district, which comprises six counties.
Starting July, Texas will require all licensed dealers to issue metal license plates to buyers at the time of their sales, hoping to curb the use of fraudulent paper tags.
