Kindred Stories, a Black-owned bookstore and community space in the Third Ward that prioritizes Black authors, will relocate across the street to the renovated historic Eldorado Ballroom.
Driving the move: Project Row Houses, where Kindred opened over three years ago, is ending leases for longtime tenants — including the bookstore, 3rd Ward Tours, Crumbville and Gulf Coast Cosmos Comic Book Co. — to revamp its incubator for small businesses.
Terri Hamm, the owner of Kindred Stories, told the Houston Chronicle the original agreement was for two years and was later extended to three. She knew the transition was on the horizon.
What they're saying: "When opening our current space … we immediately realized we needed something bigger, but we made it work," Kindred announced on Instagram.
"We maximized our small space and beautiful Reading Garden, but alas, it's time to move on and we couldn't be more ready."
What's next: The new location is expected to open in early May, a store associate tells Axios.
