Budget Bites: Lebanese flat bread

Axios Texas bureau chief Bob here with one more Middle Eastern bite that I enjoyed on a recent trip to Houston.

The big picture: Houston is home to about 200,000 Muslims, one of the largest populations in the U.S., and so it's a great place to find cuisine from the Muslim world, from Indonesia to Morocco.

Zoom in: Lebanese cuisine is perhaps best known for kibbeh, falafel and hummus, but the tiny eastern Mediterranean country also has a rich bread tradition.

I found just what I was looking for in a Westheimer strip mall: a bakery with roots in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

What to order: Akkawi cheese and zaatar saj ($5.75)

A popular Levantine street food, saj is a thin flat bread made on a convex metal surface, lightly spread with savory or sweet toppings and folded over to make a sandwich.
