The Lunar New Year — ringing in the Year of the Snake — is Wednesday, and Houston has plenty of ways to celebrate.
The big picture: The holiday, also known as the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, celebrates the beginning of the new year following the lunisolar calendar.
Here are our favorite ways to usher in the Year of the Snake:
💅 Snag a lucky red envelope when you get a manicure at Vidao Nails & Day Spa on Wednesday.
- Complimentary snacks and drinks are also offered. 9am-7pm.
🎵 Jam to Vietnamese New Wave and catch a live performance from Vu Khoa at Echoes on Wednesday.
- Free. Tunes start at 4pm with Vu Khoa taking the stage 8-10pm.
🎊 Celebrate at the Asia Society of Texas in the Museum District on Saturday.
- Games, performances and other activities are free, but registration is required. An additional music and dance performance by Huaxing Arts Group Houston is $12.
- 10am-4pm.
🐍 Join the Chinese Community Center of Houston to ring in the Year of the Snake on Saturday.
- Free. 10am-4pm.
🛍️ Check out the Lunar New Year market at downtown's Market Square Park on Saturday.
- Dragon and lion dances, shopping, and cultural workshops by Young Audiences of Houston are free. Noon to 6pm.
🧧 Gather with the Texas Buddhist Association to celebrate the Lunar New Year at Alief's Jade Buddha Temple on Sunday.
- Leaders will distribute lunch and red envelopes. Free. 10am to noon.
