Houston's freezing temperatures continue after record snow

• William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental Airports plan to reopen at 9am Wednesday for flights that depart at 11am and later.

Threat level: An extreme cold warning from the National Weather Service remains in effect until 9am, with dangerously cold wind chills expected to dip as low as 10-15°F.

• Sunshine and highs in the 40s by Wednesday afternoon should bring safer conditions, per the NWS.

At least two storm-related deaths have been reported in the Houston area.

• A woman died Monday night while driving in snowy conditions in northeast Harris County, and a man, believed to be unhoused, was found dead in a parking lot in the Katy area Tuesday morning, per the Harris County's Sheriff's Office.

By the numbers: The Houston area saw 2 to 6 inches of snow Tuesday, per the NWS.

• Widespread power outages were largely avoided — a relief for Houstonians who remember the 2021 winter storm.

• A few thousand residents experienced outages throughout the day, but more than 99% of CenterPoint Energy's 2.8 million customers remained unaffected.

What they're saying: "We can't become complacent. Do not let the clear skies fool you ... the melting snow will turn the ice as soon as the sun goes down," Mayor John Whitmire said at a Tuesday evening press conference.

The bottom line: Temperatures will gradually warm up throughout the week, climbing above freezing by the weekend. Until then, stay cozy and bundled up.
