Houston gets its snow day

• A widespread hard freeze is also in store Tuesday night as local leaders work to provide shelter to those in need.

Threat level: Local leaders and forecasters are urging folks to stay off the roads until at least noon Wednesday, when temperatures will rise just above freezing before dipping below 32°F again overnight.

The intrigue: CenterPoint Energy has nearly 1,200 additional workers at the ready for restoration efforts should freezing conditions cause power outages.

Closures: Both Hobby and Bush Intercontinental airports are closed Tuesday and will be reopened "as soon as weather conditions allow," according to the Houston Airports System.

• Metro's bus and HOV lane services are also suspended, with rail service operating on a limited basis.
• Houston ISD and many other school districts and universities are closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Many local governments and nonprofits are operating warming centers for vulnerable residents.
