Texas is home to nearly 1.4 million veterans, more than 250,000 of whom live in the Houston area, per Census Bureau figures.

Why it matters: Veterans Day is Monday. The national holiday was first celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919, to commemorate the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

Zoom in: Veterans make up 4.6% of the Houston metro population, with about one-third having served since 9/11.

What's next: Houston's Veterans Day celebrations are on Monday, with a ceremony at City Hall at 10am followed by a parade at 11:30am.
