The Houston Grand Opera is presenting a classic fairytale — with some fun twists.
State of the opera: Gioachino Rossini's "Cinderella" brings the story to life, but it's not quite Disney's version.
In this performance, there's a wicked stepfather, some exciting impersonations and bracelets instead of glass slippers, all while highlighting Cinderella's kindness.
Driving the news: The three-hour Italian opera is on stage through Nov. 9. On the final day, HGO is hosting its first-ever family day with a condensed 90-minute showing in English designed to introduce a new generation to opera.
The family day show will have a relaxed environment with low lighting and flexible entry and re-entry. There will also be activities for kids in the lobby like crafts, photo experiences and costumed characters.
Shafaq's highlights: The performance was a delightful comedy, with colorful costuming and set design and hilarious, scene-stealing mice.
Seeing people in the audience dressed as princesses added to the charm.
