Two Houston-area parks received more than $20 million for renovations from the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The big picture: Gulfton's Burnett Bayland Park received $11.3 million and Third Ward's MacGregor Park got $10 million for upgrades, per the announcement.
Catch up quick: Burnett Bayland Park has been undergoing development with community input. The master plan for the park includes expansive green spaces to combat the urban heat island effect in Gulfton, ponds, a gathering lawn, picnic areas and sports fields.
- The long-term vision for Burnett Bayland includes expanding the 35-acre park to a 75-acre public space. Harris County Precinct 4 has secured $39 million for Phase 1 of construction, with federal funds covering about 30% of the costs.
Meanwhile, the historic and aging 65-acre MacGregor Park is set for a major revitalization following a community-driven master plan. The Houston Parks Board (HPB) is fundraising over $50 million for the project, which will align with HPB's plan to enhance parks along the Bayou Greenways system.
- The master plan includes renovation to the tennis center, swimming pool and community center, improved walking trails connecting to Brays Bayou, a new naturalistic amphitheater and an ADA-accessible playground.
What they're saying: Burnett Bayland Park "is not just a park, it's community development at its core. We are building based on community needs, taking their input and infusing it into a transformative public space," said Reynaldo Guerra, Harris County Precinct 4's chief infrastructure officer.
- "The planned renovations [for MacGregor Park] will not only preserve the park's rich legacy but also enhance its role as a vital hub for recreation, culture and community connection," said Kenneth Allen, director of Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
What's next: Construction for Burnett Bayland begins in late 2025, and MacGregor Park construction starts in 2026.
