The long-awaited expansion of George Bush Intercontinental Airport Terminal D is complete and will open Oct. 22.
Why it matters: The renovation and expansion of the international terminal will accommodate growing passenger and airline demand while strengthening Bush Airport's status as a global aviation hub.
- Plus, anyone who's traveled to the airport since construction began in 2019 can rest a little knowing it'll be less chaotic. Maybe.
The big picture: The Terminal D revamp is part of the $1.5 billion IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program. It includes:
- A refresh of the existing Terminal D (completed in 2023)
- An expansion of Terminal D called the "D-West Pier" that included the demolition of the old Terminal C-North facility (fall 2024)
- A new International Central Processor, where travelers will purchase tickets and check in baggage (winter 2024 and summer 2025)
By the numbers: The expansion adds 160,000 square feet, making the entire terminal 499,650 square feet.
- The expanded Terminal D is expected to create 250 jobs across the 16 new retail and dining options, per the Houston Airport System.
What they're saying: "This world-class facility will provide a seamless and efficient travel experience for millions of passengers each year. The new pier will provide the necessary capacity so that Houston can continue to attract more nonstop flights to cities around the globe," Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston airports, said in a statement.
- "This project is a major investment in our city's future," Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a press release.
The D-West Pier features eight new art commissions, and restaurants including The Annie, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Jamba Juice and more.
- Amenities include a mothers room, a sensory room, a kids play area, space for Harmony in the Air musical performances and restrooms that use smart technology.
Reality check: Alas, construction at the airport is not done, with United Airlines's $2.6 billion overhaul of Terminal B ongoing until 2026.
