Houstonkids have access to free meals this summer.
Why it matters: Summertime meal programs — like Houston ISD's Summer Feeding Program, which kicks off today — help bridge a gap for children who rely on meal assistance during the school year but are left to fend for themselves when school is out.
Research shows that food programs ultimately help reduce a child's food insecurity and improve school performance.
How it works: The HISD program provides any child up to 18 years old (along with enrolled HISD students with disabilities up to age 21) with a healthy breakfast and lunch at select campuses across the district.
Meals are served Monday through Friday. Breakfast is served from 7:15 to 8:15am, and lunch is served from 11am to noon. Some campuses might end lunch later than noon.
