Michigan's U.S. Senate race this fall will pit Democratic U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin against Republican former congressman Mike Rogers.

The big picture: Given Michigan's swing state status and the narrowly divided U.S. Senate, the contest between Slotkin and Rogers will be among the closest-watched in the country.

The general election winner will replace Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who is retiring.

Zoom in: Slotkin was leading businessman Hill Harper, 77%-23%, as of about 5am Wednesday with 88% of expected votes reported, and Rogers had about 63% of votes in the Republican primary as of that time.

The AP called both races at about 9pm Tuesday night.

What they're saying: "This election is the most consequential election, I think, in my lifetime," Rogers told supporters Tuesday night at a bar in Lake Orion after the race was called, according to the Detroit News.

Meanwhile, incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar won the Democratic primary for Detroit's 13th District U.S. House seat, with the race called at 2am Wednesday by the AP.

Thanedar had nearly 55% of the vote as of 4am, with 77% of votes counted, over Detroit City Council member Mary Waters, who was endorsed by Mayor Mike Duggan and received 34% of the vote so far. Attorney Shakira Lynn Hawkins received 11%.

Catch up quick: Thanedar snapped Detroit's 70-year streak of Black representation in Congress after defeating a loaded field of Black candidates two years ago.

The 13th District includes parts of Detroit and Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, Highland Park, the Grosse Pointes, Melvindale, Lincoln Park, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor, Wayne, River Rouge and Wyandotte.

The other side: Republican Martell Bivings was the lone Republican candidate. He'll face the winner of Tuesday's primary in November.

State of play: Rep. Rashida Tlaib had no Democratic challenger in the 12th District, which includes parts of Detroit, Dearborn, Southfield and western Wayne County.

Plus: Many Wayne County races hadn't yet been called as of 6am Wednesday, though Detroit's library millage renewal was leading with 85% of the vote.

What's next: Vice President Kamala Harris and her new running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will hold a rally Wednesday night at Detroit Metro Airport, the Free Press reports.

Election

Why it matters: Since Detroiters vote overwhelmingly for Democrats, the August primary races across the city are typically more competitive than the November general elections.

State of play: View a sample ballot on the Secretary of State's website, where you can find information on your polling place and nearest drop box.

Remember when filling out a ballot in primary elections, voters must choose one party to vote for in the partisan sections of the ballot. In the November general election, voters can vote for candidates in either party.

What they're saying: The city of Detroit expects 13%-18% overall turnout, with around 45,000 absentee ballots expected to be cast out of the 70,000 requested.

U.S. Senate: The winner of the November general election will replace Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, who is retiring.

The Democratic slate features U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin and businessman Hill Harper.

The Republican primary includes former congressmen Mike Rogers and Justin Amash, and Sherry O'Donnell, whose opposition to COVID-19 mandates inspired her start in politics. Sandy Pensler, who dropped out to endorse Rogers, will appear on the ballot.

Michigan House: The Legislature's Democratic majority is at stake in November as candidates are running for Michigan's 110 House seats. The state Senate isn't on the ballot until 2026.

Detroit's 13th District House seat held by incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar is being challenged by attorney Shakira Lynn Hawkins and Detroit City Council member Mary Waters, endorsed by Mayor Mike Duggan.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib has no Democratic challenger in the 12th District, which includes parts of Detroit, Dearborn, Southfield and western Wayne County.

These House primaries across Metro Detroit have our attention: 

House District 5, where Democratic candidates include incumbent Rep. Regina Weiss, 21-year-old Kevin Keys III, Eric Love and Crystal Bailey, the former Oak Park School Board of Education vice president. The only Republican candidate is Will Sears.

The House District 3 Democratic race, which includes incumbent Rep. Alabas Farhat, Ziad Abdulmalik and Gus H. Tarraf, is the first test for the freshman representative who represents a pro-Palestinian district across Dearborn.

House District 14 features Democratic candidates Mike McFall and former longtime Warren Mayor Jim Fouts.

3rd District Court: Running to join the state's largest district court are Nicole Leighanne Castka, John Larkin, Adrienne G. Scruggs.

What you need to know before Election Day Tuesday in Detroit

Tuesday is Election Day across Michigan.Why it matters: Since Detroiters vote overwhelmingly for Democrats, the August primary races across the city are typically more competitive than the November general elections.

Two Democrats, attorney Shakira Lynn Hawkins and Detroit City Council member Mary Waters, are challenging incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar for Detroit's 13th District U.S. House seat.

The winner is likely to be elected in November.

Catch up quick: Thanedar defeated a loaded field of Black candidates and snapped Detroit's 70-year streak of Black representation in Congress. Detroit's political establishment appeared to be lining up behind former state Rep. Adam Hollier before a signature fraud scandal ended his campaign.

While Waters' endorsement from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan was viewed as a credibility bump, Thanedar also won high-profile endorsements from U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the National Education Association.

Follow the money: Thanedar, a millionaire businessman, is far outspending Hawkins and Waters. Campaign finance records show he's loaned his campaign $4.8 million with more than $5 million cash on hand as of the most recent reporting period.

Waters has raised more than $111,000, with about $20,000 in her war chest.

Friction point: The Waters campaign accused Thanedar of being behind a TV ad purchased by the dark money group Blue Wave Action that criticized Waters for her 2010 misdemeanor guilty plea for filing a false tax return.

The other side: Republican Martell Bivings is the lone Republican candidate. He'll face the winner of Tuesday's primary in November.

The primary ballot also includes important proposals, including one to renew funding for the Detroit Public Library.

What they're saying: The city of Detroit expects voter turnout to be between 13% and 18%, with about 45,000 absentee ballots expected to be cast out of the 70,000 requested.

Nearly 3,000 voters across the city voted at early voting sites, and nearly 12,000 turned in absentee ballots at early voting centers.

Do I need an ID? Michigan law prompts poll workers to ask voters to show ID. If you don't have one, you can still vote.

Those without an ID can sign an affidavit attesting that they do not have photo identification.

If an emergency prevents you from going to the polls on Election Day, Michigan allows voters to request an emergency absentee ballot.

Requests for an emergency ballot must be submitted before 4pm on Election Day.

The emergency must have happened at a time that made it impossible for you to apply for a regular absentee ballot.
