Fall is the best time to plant trees in Michigan

Tree planting 101: Choose your location and tree. The state has a tree selection guide, but it's dense, so try MSU's advice.

• Call 811 or go to missdig811.org to identify underground water and utility lines before planting.
• Dig a whole two to three times the width of the tree's root ball. Shave off outer roots.
• Plant deep enough that the roots are covered, but so you can still see the trunk flare out at the bottom.
• Water!

Zoom in: Detroiters can request a tree through city government. The Greening of Detroit also takes applications for community tree planting.

• Ann Arbor residents can also request tree planting.

What's next: Plant a tree and add it to the state DNR's interactive map. It's tracking progress in its goal of getting 50 million trees planted statewide by 2030.
