New pedestrian bridge arrives for Rouge Greenway

A new pedestrian bridge has arrived in Dearborn, marking a major milestone in the expansion of the Rouge Gateway Greenway.

Why it matters: The new segment will open up more of the Rouge River to the public and help connect Hines Park and U-M Dearborn to a growing regional trail network.

Driving the news: Friends of the Rouge and local officials gathered Thursday to celebrate the arrival of the first of two pedestrian bridges planned for the trail's second phase.

State of play: The bridge will be permanently installed over the next several days, with a second bridge expected by the end of September.

The nearly 2-mile trail extension is expected to be finished by the end of 2026.

The big picture: Friends of the Rouge has secured $6.9 million for the second phase's construction.
