The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit is celebrating summer with three new exhibitions starting Saturday.
Why it matters: The shows, meant to reflect how complex life is, come after the contemporary art museum reopened in late April following an extensive renovation.
"Prime Mover" by Pat Phillips: The Pennsylvania-based artist's first solo show looks at race, class, labor and power.
- He uses acrylic paint and airbrush to showcase recurring themes like machinery, uniforms and industry.
"Anyspace? Whatever." by rootoftwo: Detroit-based artists Cézanne Charles and John Marshall created an architectural installation called "The Rotunda" that delves into privacy, governance and technological rights.
- The exhibition also includes a tabletop game where players can explore a city subject to high surveillance.
"Bend, Break, Mend" by Karyn Olivier: The Brooklyn sculpture and installation artist works with found objects that have been used, tossed away or worn over time.
- She also challenges monuments and other forms of historical commemoration, repositioning Black cultural history at the center of public spaces.

- Admission: $12, but free for kids 12 and under.
- Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Open 11am-5pm Wednesdays, 11am-8pm Thursdays and Fridays, and 11am-5pm Saturdays and Sundays.
