🚨 ICE questions: City Council Member Denzel McCampbell wants to know if residents injured in ICE vehicle pursuits have cause to sue.
Can the city make any claims of its own or support injured residents if they sue, McCampbell asked in a memo to top city lawyer Conrad Mallet.
The questions cited two incidents: A man was injured in a Detroit car crash involving ICE agents in early June, the Free Press reported. ICE said an agent was also injured.
Also, a Venezuelan asylum seeker and eastside resident was injured amid a May car chase, Outlier reported. She claimed to have been injured when ICE agents forced her to the ground, while ICE said the injuries were from the car crashing.
Zoom out: The inquiry is another example of city efforts to dig into ICE's actions. The city limits how it works with ICE, though it cannot obstruct the federal agency and isn't a sanctuary city.
