Detroit hotel boom aims to attract more events

Downtown's hotel pipeline is ramping up to attract more events and conventions.

Why it matters: More than 1,600 new hotel rooms are slated to come online — about a 25% increase from today's roughly 6,000 rooms, per Visit Detroit.

The added capacity will help the city attract major events beyond next year's NCAA men's Final Four at Ford Field, tourism officials say.

Driving the news: Plans were announced last week for a new convention center hotel, just north of Huntington Place, to open in 2029 with about 600 rooms.

Three other major hotel openings are scheduled next year:

JW Marriott Detroit Water Square (600 rooms): Waterfront hotel at the former Joe Louis Arena site.
The Detroit Edition (227 rooms): Inside the Hudson's Detroit tower on Woodward Avenue.
NoMad Detroit (180 rooms): Michigan Central Station's incoming hotel will anchor its west side and occupy the building's top five floors.
