Pistons still await first-round opponent

The Pistons' first-round playoff series starts Sunday at 6:30pm, but their opponent won't be decided until this week's NBA play-in tournament shakes out.

Why it matters: Detroit (60-22) enters the playoffs as the Eastern Conference's No. 1 seed.

The team hasn't won a playoff series since 2008.

State of play: The play-in tournament starts Tuesday to decide the final two playoff teams in each conference.

Detroit's opponent will emerge from the East's four play-in teams: Philadelphia, Orlando, Charlotte and Miami.

How it works: The winner of Wednesday's Philadelphia-Orlando matchup secures the No. 7 seed, while the loser gets one more shot against the winner of Tuesday's Charlotte-Miami game at 7:30pm on Prime Video.

The Pistons' playoff opponent will be decided Friday, between the Philly-Orlando loser and the Charlotte-Miami winner.

The bottom line: The Pistons know they're in — but not who they're playing just yet.
